Two new bridges are going to be built in the eastern part of the metropolis to replace an obsolete overpass. The eastern part of the Prague Ring Road near the Černý Most district is one of the busiest in Prague, with up to 50,000 cars passing through daily. This section, which was built in the 1980s, is in a poor technical condition. So is the overpass over Chlumecká Street, a twin bridge made of precast concrete girders on the ring road, going over the road connecting Černý Most and Horní Počernice. It was built thirty years ago as a part of the then R1 Satalice - Běchovice road and put into operation at the end of 1984. It has not undergone any major refurbishment since then.
Even though the name of the contract refers to a repair of the overpass, the scope of works is actually more extensive - it involves the demolition of the existing bridges on the Prague Ring Road (including the substructure), which will be replaced with two new bridge structures. The works are divided into two phases. In the first one, which was carried out from spring to October this year, the construction companies first demolished the original bridge going towards the centre of Prague, built foundations for bridge abutments and pillars, installed pre-stressed precast concrete girders, and executed a cast-in-place RC bridge deck, its white colour contrasting with the roadway. A new asphalt pavement with temporary road markings was laid on the bridge deck in October, to enable opening of the western part of the bridge structure to traffic. And since the original bridge structure was also a twin bridge, the second phase of the project should be carried out in a similar way starting next April, only in the opposite direction.
